Allergic reaction

Description

Abnormal response of the immune system of the body on certain types of foreign substances. Substance that causes an allergic reaction is called allergen. Initial contact with the allergen does not produce any symptoms. However, during the time immune system begins to create antibodies on the allergen and future interactions with the allergen activate more dramatic reactions. Response on allergen varies from sneezing to respiratory difficulties, shock and death.

Symptoms

Hives, other rashes, swelling, mouth swelling, throat swelling, sneezing, difficult breathing,stifling, vertigo or faint due to low blood pressure.

Overview

History of disease is being taken and physical examination is being done. Allergic testing is being done in order to determine allergen that is causing a reaction.

Therapy

Therapy depends on the severity of the symptoms. Treatment includes: antihistamines, steroids, adrenaline, intravenous fluids and/or oxygen. Patient must avoid the cause of reaction.
