Stretched or torn ligament. Any joint can be involved but sprains most often occur on the ankles, knees or fingers. Sprained joints have normal function except weaken motion ability due to the pain. Sprains cause pain, swelling and bruising on the injured joint. The muscle can be also stretched or torn.
