Bee sting (wasp sting)

Description

Bee sting leads to local redness, swelling and pain. Infection, called cellulitis, may rarely develop. Sting can be life-threatening if the patient has a serious allergy, swelling and low blood pressure.

Symptoms

Most of the symptoms are on the spot of the sting and they include redness, elevated temperature, sensitivity. If the patient is allergic to the sting, the following is noticed: rash, itch, lip or mouth swelling, difficulty swallowing, breathing troubles, fainting.

Therapy

The objective of the treatment is reducing of symptoms. Following treatment is used for the local reaction: removal of the sting, antihistamines (diphenhydramine), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen/broken, naproxen/Aleve), and painkillers, paracetamol. If the patient has an allergic reaction, following drugs may be used depending on the severity of the symptoms: antihistamines, epinephrine, corticosteroids, intravenous liquid intake and/or mechanical ventilation. Patients with strong (severe) allergic reactions should have epinephrine with them and should know how to use it. This type of injuries rarely requires the use of antibiotics.
