Hand tendon inflammation

Description

De Quervains tenosynovitis or hand tendon inflammation is a inflammation of shell that surrounds two tendons which control movement of the thumb. The inflammation causes that the shell around the tendon swells and enlarges, making moves of the thumb and wrist painful. Making a fist or catching of objects are also painful for the patient.

Symptoms

Pain in the lateral side of a wrist, on the side of a thumb, is a main cause, pain can strech down or up, and move of the thumb increases the pain, swelling over basis of the thums, numbness on the back of the thumb and forefinger.

Overview

History of disease is being taken and physical examination is being done. X-rays might be recommended if there is a fear that the arthritis or fracture are causes of the symptoms.

Therapy

Treatment can include setting of a splint, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs / NSAID or injection of cortisone in the tendon shell. If the symptoms last, surgery might be recommended.
