Pyomyositis or muscle infection.Bacterial muscle inflammation. Bacterium which is the most common cause is Staphylococcus while the type MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) appears more frequently as causer. A disease usually begins with an infection in the bloodstream which spreads to the muscles. A muscle injury increases the chances for appearance of this disease. Three quarters of total number of the patients has weakened immune system, whether due to disease such as HIV or treatment such as chemotherapy. Pyomyositis most often occurs in children between the age of 2 and 5 but this disease may appear in any age group. The pelvic and leg muscles are the most commonly affected. This disease usually occurs in tropical regions. If it is not treated, the infection may affect other organs and lead to death (sepsis).
Fever, pain in the affected muscle, sensitivity, muscle swelling, problem with moving if the pelvis and legs are affected. In later phase may appear skin redness and elevated temperature of the affected skin tissue. If the infection is not treated, symptoms may also involve low blood pressure, dizziness, confusion and death can also occur.
Anamnesis is being taken and physical examination is being done. The best way to confirm the diagnosis is magnetic resonance imaging. CT scan may also be done. Diagnosis may also be set by the blood analysis (complete blood count and bacterial analysis).
CT scan and magnetic resonance.
Infectology and Orthopedics
A wide range of intravenous antibiotics for MRSA treatment is given. If there is an abscess or the bone is affected, surgery is necessary to remove the infected tissue.
