Thrombophlebitis represents blockage of the vein which is superficial (close to the surface) and associated with inflammation of the veins. It often occurs in people who suffer from varicose veins but can appear in any situation where the blood flow is slowed down (pregnancy, immobilization). Intravenous drug addicts and persons who get intravenous medicines have greater chances to get this disease.
Symptoms are: redness and swelling along the affected vein. In some cases the vein is hard as a wire.
Anamnesis is being taken and physical examination is being done. Anamnesis and examination are often sufficient to diagnose the disease. Additional analysis should be done sometimes to eliminate other medical problems associated with thrombophlebitis. Ultrasound examination can be done to eliminate presence of deep thrombophlebitis.
Partial thromboplastin (a PTT or PTT), complete blood count (CBC), prothromboplastin test (PT, INR) and ultrasound examination.
