An abnormal growth of cells in the lungs. The cancer can occur primarily from lung cells or by being spread from a distant tumor (metastasis). It occurs in adults of both genders, usually between ages 40 and 70. Lung cancer causes greatermortality than any other type of cancer. The frequency is stable or falling in recent years in direct relation to the frequency of cigarette smoking. The cancer cells destroy lung tissue and damage the surrounding organs. There are two main types of lung cancer: small-cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer.

Anamnesis will be taken and medical examination will be done. Imaging procedures are performed to identify the cancer. Type of the cancer is identified by biopsy and analysis of sputum on cancer cells.

Treatment depends on the concrete type of cancer and the severity of disease. Each type is treated differently. Chemotherapy, radiation and/or surgery may be necessary.
