Sifilis

Description

Contagious sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacteriaTreponema pallidum. A disorder appears in three grades, wherein the following one is more severe than the previous one. First grade, primary syphilis, cause painful sore usually in the area of genitals. Second grade («secondary syphilis«) causes fever, rash and pain in the joints. Progressed syphilis («tertiary syphilis«) causes damages on the brain or blood vessels and can make unreparable damage.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on the extent of the disease. Primary syphilis: asymptomatic, painful sores, swollen lymph nodes. Secondary syphilis: fever, fatigue, aches, rash, pain in the joints, loss of appetite. Tertiary syphilis: confusion, loss of coordination, weakening of the heart valves, aortic aneurysm.

Overview

Anamnesis will be taken and medical examination will be done. Following diagnostic analysis will be done:VDRL, RPR, FTA-ABS.

Therapy

Therapy depends on the severity of the disease. Antibiotics are prescribed and they involve:penicillin, tetracycline or doxycycline.
