Ear infection, middle ear

Description

Otitis media or middle ear infection (infection behind the eardrum). This infection causes the accumulation of infected fluid (pus) in the middle ear. The middle ear contains tiny ear bones. Otitis media is the most common cause of a pain in the ear. Mostly caused by bacteria, but can be initiated after viruses or allergies cause blockage in the ears and sinuses. Most infections are being healed on their own, without antibiotics, as long as the infected fluid finds the way to run out. In most cases, the middle ear is being emptied through Eustachian tube on the back of the nose. Occasionaly, the ear inflammation is being taken through the hole connected in the ear drum (perforated or punctured eardrum). Occasionaly, the infected ear is being cleaned through a dimple that is formed on the eardrum (eardrum rupture).

Symptoms

Ear pain, sensation of the ear being blocked, the sensation of general illness, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of hearing in affected ear, dizziness. Children show increased confusion, loss of appetite, they have fever and cry.

Overview

History of disease is being taken and physical examination is being done. Direct exam of the ear will show redness of the eardrum, as well as the fluid behind it.

Therapy

Most ear infections usually go away on their own, without antibiotics. The antibiotics are prescribed for persistent symptoms. Painkillers, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs / brufen / ibuprofen / naproxen /Naprosyn and acetaminophen (paracetamol) are given for pain. In cases of severe or recurrent infection, drainage tubes are being set.
