Scalp cut

Description

Scalp laceration or scalp cut. It usually occurs due to strong hit. Most injuries are easily repaired. Skull fractures and brain injuries can occur. Furthther examinations depend on the mechanism of the injury and manifested symptoms. If the injury is followed by confusion, weakness, loss of consciousness or vomiting, you should immediattely contact a doctor.

Overview

Anamnesis is being taken and physical examination is being done. The wound be examined carefully due to possible skull fractures. CT scan can also be done for determination of possible complications (skull fracture or brain damage).

Therapy

A cut is being stitched. A neurosurgeon should be consulted if a skull fracture is diagnosed. Scalp cuts should be repaired within 6 hours to prevent the infection. While waiting for proceeding the wound can be cleaned with water and covered with gauze or a clean cloth. The wound can be pressed to stop bleeding. If the bleeding is profuse, you should immediately seek for a medical assistance. If the wound is dirty, the patient should have to receive tetanus if in last 5 years he/she did not received it and last 10 years for clean wound.
