Accumulated fluid in the abdominal cavity

Description

Ascites or accumulated fluid in the abdominal cavity - peritoneum. Causes are numerous, but ascites is often a consequence of liver insufficiency and cancer. Accumulation of fluid may make difficulties in breathing because fluid pushes diaphragm upwards, pressing the lungs and preventing them from spreading normally. Fluid may also become infected and lead to bacterial peritonitis, life-threatening condition.

Symptoms

Swelling of the stomach, weight gain, abdominal pain, difficulty breathing.

Overview

Anamnesis is being taken and physical examination is being done. The doctor may take a sample of fluid from stomach for analysis (abdominal portion). Ultrasound, CT scan, magnetic resonance (MRI) may be helpful in determining the causes.

Complete blood count (CBC), biochemical blood analysis, ultrasound, CT scan, magnetic resonance (MRI).

Therapy

Therapy is directed towards discovering and removal of causes of the disorder. Removal of fluid from the stomach (abdominal portion) is often just a temporary solution since the new fluid is being accumulated again, sometimes just after few days. Diuretics, most frequently spironolactone furosemide, are usually prescribed. Lowering salt intake sometimes helps in preventing new accumulation of fluid.
