Esophageal rupture (tear in esophagus)

Description

Rupture of esophagus.The esophagus is the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. The esophageal rupture occurs as a consequence of tearing of the esophagus. Cancer, ingesting corrosive fluids, forceful vomiting and trauma can provoke the rupture. The esophagus can also be damaged during an endoscopy. Leakage of food or fluid into the chest through the ruptured area can cause serious irritations, infections and even death.

Symptoms

Chest pain, fever, shortness of breath, weak pulse, pain with swallowing, watery bubbles under the skin on the neck.

Overview

Anamnesis is being taken and physical examination is being done. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS), gastrografin swallow, chest CT scan or magnetic resonance can be done to determine presence of rupture.

Tests

Complete blood count (CBC), biochemical blood analysis, CT scan, magnetic resonance and X-rays.

Therapy

Therapy depends on the size of the tear. Patient has greater chances to survive if the treatment starts as soon as possible. Surgical reparation of the rupture should be done as soon as possible.Fluids and antibiotics are usually given intravenously.
