Scar

Description

A scar is natural part of healing process of the wound. Fibrous tissue replaces normal skin on the site of the injury. Sometimes the scar may grow too much which result in keloid formation or hyperthrophic scar. Scars can remain after surgery, injury or burn.

Symptoms

Symptoms may involve flat or raised, thickened flesh colored skin along the skin injury. Some scars may be itchy or painful.

Overview

Anamnesis will be taken and medical examination will be done. Diagnosis usually can be set only based clinical examination. Biopsy can be done if diagnosis is unclear.

Therapy

Scars do not require therapy. However, therapy can be prescribed for cosmetic reasons. Standard therapy involves compressive dressing or steroid injections. Other options are radiation, chemical pilling, cryotherapy (freezing), and injection of chemotherapeutic agents or laser treatment.
