Gingivitis or inflammation of the gums. Gingiva is a tissue that covers the jaw bone and the tooth root. Food, plaque and bacteria remain between the teeth and cause swelling and pain of the tissue and gum inflammation. Gingivitis is the lightest form of the periodontal disease. If the disease progresses, it may involve several surrounding tissues becoming in that way a periodontitis. If not treated, this disoreder may lead to teeth loss. Recent studies have shown a correlation between periodontal disease and heart disease: patients with periodontal disease may have two times higher risk at heart attack or stroke than the people without periodontal disease.
