Canker sores or oral ulcers are defects of the mucous membrane, i.e., eroded areas on the inner surface of the gums and cheeks.Oral ulcers are also called ulcers in the mouth (aphthae). Some people get oral ulcers without a known reason. They can also be caused by a virus (such as herpes simplex virus, or Coxsackie virus which is common in children). Occasionally an ulcer is actually a cancer. Persistent and severe oral ulcers may be caused by irritation from a tooth edge, dentures or dental implant, as well as by some autoimmune disorder.

Anamnesis and physical examination will be done. A swab of the ulcer may be sent for analysis. To confirm the cause of the problem biopsy of the edge of the ulcer may be necessary.
