Penis swelling

Description

Balanitis or penis swelling is inflammation of head of the penis (glans). Most frequently it occurs in uncircumcised men due to inappropriate hygiene or bad treatment of diabetes. Inflammation is usually caused by fungal infection. Also, it can be caused by strong soaps or partial rinsing of the soap during taking a bath. It is rarely linked with reactive arthritis or lichen sclerosis et atrophic.

Symptoms

Redness of foreskin or penis, smelly discharge, painful penis and foreskin, rash.

Overview

Anamnesis will be taken and medical examination will be done. Smear test might be necessary, as well.

Therapy

Anti-fungicidal medications, either oral or topical, are given for contagious cases. If it is the inflammation linked to reactive arthritis, steroidal creams may be used. Circumcision is required in severe and recurrent cases.
