Breathing techniques for easier childbirth
Every woman experiences childbirth differently and breathing helps women to ease labor pain. Correct breathing helps to relieve pain, lower stress, and otherwise make it easier for the pregnant woman to pass through contractions. Breathing assists with oxygenating the body, ensures that muscles work as efficiently as possible, and allows for control and calm during labor.
Each stage during labor has its own breathing techniques and these are some of them:
1. Slow, rhythmic breathing
The early stages of labor are all about slow, deep breathing to relax. This is a simple trick to keep the expectant mother relaxed as the contractions start getting more severe. Breathe in through the nose for every 4-6 seconds, then slowly breathe out through the mouth for every 6-8 seconds.
Breathing helps keep a steady pulse and reduces tension in the body.
2. Breath During Contractions
At this stage, during very intensive contractions, "lighter" breathing can be used, the method called 'pattern breathing', which consists of two seconds of inbreathing through the nose and three seconds of fast but short outbreathing through the mouth.
This breathing is in accordance with the intensity of the contractions, encouraging the woman's focus on being present in the moment. Research indicates that controlled breathing leads to lowered perception of pain during this stage.
3. Breathing for relaxation between contractions
Between contractions, breathing in a slow, deep manner has been found to facilitate the body's recuperation process. By concentrating on long exhalations, a pregnant woman may also help to minimize stress levels and gather energy toward completing the labor.
4. Breathing for tension
For this phase of labor, breathing needs to be adjusted to help deliver the baby. A technique that involves taking a deep breath through the mouth before straining and releasing air spontaneously under pressure during pushing is recommended. Holding your breath should be avoided, as it can reduce the flow of oxygen and cause additional stress.
Proper breathing technique has physical benefits, but it also works psychologically by reducing the feeling of fear and bringing a feeling of control. Preparation of and practice with these techniques before giving birth will help make the birth experience a positive one, but each pregnant woman should consult her doctor, midwife, or prenatal course instructor regarding the types of techniques that are most effective for her as an individual.
