Chemical peeling

Chemical peeling is one of the most popular treatments in dermatology and aesthetic medicine. This treatment involves the application of chemical substances to the skin in order to remove the surface layers and stimulate regeneration. As a result of the treatment are expected even complexion, improved skin texture and reduction of signs of aging. What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peeling is a medical-aesthetic treatment that uses solutions of different acids to remove damaged skin layers. Through this process, cell renewal is encouraged, peeling can help treat a variety of problems, such as hyperpigmentation, acne, wrinkles, scars and sun damaged skin. Chemical peeling includes different levels of intensity such as: superficial, medium deep and deep peeling and it's necessary to adapt it to the needs of each patient.

The types of chemical peels that exist are classified according to the depth of action, so they are distinguished as follows:

A superficial peel that involves the use of a mild acid, such as glycolic or salicylic, and removes only the surface layer of the epidermis. It's ideal for refreshing the complexion, reducing oiliness, and improving texture.

Medium-deep peeling penetrates into the deeper layers of the epidermis and uses acids such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA). It's used to treat moderate wrinkles, pigmentation, and superficial scars.

The last and most intense form of peeling is the so-called Deep Peeling, and this treatment uses strong acids such as phenol to reach the dermis. The results are drastically more noticeable, but the recovery process is longer and the treatment requires greater caution when performing it.

Chemical peeling treatment begins with an assessment of the condition of the skin by an expert. After cleaning the skin, a suitable chemical solution is applied, where the acids cause controlled damage to the skin, which stimulates the natural regeneration process. Dead skin cells are sloughed off over the next few days, and underneath is a new, healthier layer of skin.

There are many advantages of chemical peeling, but we will highlight some of them:

Rejuvenation of the skin by stimulating the production of collagen, which improves the elasticity and firmness of the skin.

A more even complexion because the exfoliation has the effect of removing hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and sun damage.

Reduction of acne and scars, especially if salicylic acid is used for exfoliation, because the removal of fat and pores are cleaned, and medium-deep peels also affect the reduction of acne scars.

In addition to the above, there are also advantages such as the improvement of skin texture and the speed of the procedure, since most treatments last from 30 to 60 minutes and don't require a long stay in the clinic.

Like any aesthetic treatment, chemical peeling carries certain risks. Possible side effects of the treatment include redness, swelling, flaking and sun sensitivity. Complications such as infections, permanent pigmentation or scars can occur with deep peels, so it is crucial that the treatment is performed by a professional.

After this type of treatment, it's necessary to use sun protection, because the skin is particularly sensitive after peeling. Moisturizers also help reduce the feeling of tightness and speed up recovery, and products containing retinol or alcohol should be avoided after the treatment.

Ideal candidates for chemical peeling are people with mild to moderate skin problems such as hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, or acne. The treatment isn't recommended for pregnant women, nursing mothers, or people with active skin infections or inflammations.

Chemical peeling is an effective and quick treatment for various types of skin problems. It has gained popularity due to its ability to provide visible results with a minimally invasive approach. Proper preparation, expert performance and proper post treatment care are key to achieving optimal results.
